How it works
Distance comes first: distance = (steps × stride length) ÷ 1000, in kilometres. Calories are then estimated from that distance and your weight, using a commonly cited average of about 0.57 calories burned per kilogram of body weight per kilometre walked: calories = distance × weight × 0.57.
The default stride length, 0.762 m (about 2.5 ft), is a typical adult average — a taller person's natural stride is longer, a shorter person's shorter, so entering your own gives a more accurate distance.
This is an estimate from a general formula, not a measurement — a fitness tracker with motion and heart-rate sensors will always read your actual activity more accurately than steps and weight alone.

Why does stride length matter?

Is this as accurate as a fitness tracker?
